Mystery Reading Passage with Comprehension Questions

Mystery Reading Comprehension Passage: The Library Ghost

Students at Pine Ridge Academy had stopped visiting the library after school.

“It’s haunted,” sixth-grader Elena whispered as she stacked books onto a cart.

Her friend Marcus rolled his eyes. “Libraries aren’t haunted.”

“Yes, they are,” Elena insisted. “Mrs. Bell heard footsteps upstairs after closing. And books keep falling off shelves by themselves.”

Marcus glanced toward the dark staircase leading to the second floor. Even he had to admit the old library looked creepy in the evening.

Just then—

THUMP.

A book crashed onto the floor nearby.

Elena jumped. “See?!”

Mrs. Bell hurried over, looking nervous. “That’s the third time today,” she said quietly.

Marcus picked up the fallen book. “Maybe the shelf is uneven.”

“No,” Mrs. Bell replied. “I checked already.”

That evening, Marcus decided to investigate.

At 5:30, he hid behind a reading table while Mrs. Bell locked the front doors. The library grew silent.

For several minutes, nothing happened.

Then came the sound:

Tap… tap… tap…

Footsteps echoed from upstairs.

Marcus slowly climbed the staircase. The second floor was empty except for rows of dusty shelves and old newspapers.

Tap… tap… tap…

The sound came again, this time near the windows.

Marcus noticed something strange. One window was slightly open.

Cold air rushed inside.

Suddenly, another book fell from a nearby shelf.

Marcus walked closer. Hanging above the shelf was a long string connected to the open window.

“What?” he murmured.

The wind blew again, pulling the string tight. The shelf shook, and another book tipped over.

At that moment, Elena burst upstairs with Mrs. Bell behind her.

“We saw lights on!” Elena exclaimed.

Marcus pointed to the string. “The ghost is just the wind.”

Mrs. Bell looked relieved. “But what about the footsteps?”

Marcus listened carefully. Tap… tap… tap…

He looked upward.

A tree branch scraped against the roof above them.

Elena laughed nervously. “So the library isn’t haunted after all.”

Mrs. Bell smiled. “I suppose old buildings make ordinary sounds seem mysterious.”

Marcus closed the window tightly. “Mystery solved.”

The next afternoon, the library was crowded again with students reading peacefully beneath the once-“haunted” staircase.
