Cause and Effect Conjunctions

Examples:

  1. We stayed at home because/ as /since it was raining.
  2. Because/as/ since it was raining, we stayed at home.
  3. She dropped out of school because she was poor.
  4. It was raining, so we stayed at home.
  • ‘Because’, ‘since’, and ‘as’ introduce a cause.
  • ‘So ’ introduces an effect.
  • Cause and effect conjunctions are: Because, as, since, so + subject.

Cause and Effect Transition Words

Examples:

  2. He got up late. For this reason, he missed the bus.
  3. Tim overslept. As a consequence, he missed his class.
  4. They studied hard. As a result, they aced the test.

  • Transitions introduce an effect and join two complete sentences.

Cause and Effect Prepositions

Examples:

  1. We stayed at home because of/due to /owing to the rain.
  2. Our flight was canceled owing to/ because of/ due to the fog.
  3. Because of the rain, we stayed at home.
  4. She dropped out of school because of poverty.
  • ‘Because of’, ‘due to’, ‘owing to’, and ‘thanks to’ introduce a cause.
  • Because of, due to, owing to, thanks to + Noun
